The YSMU COBRAIN center was privileged to have Professor Apkar Apkarian, the Director of the Apkarian Foundation, as a guest speaker, where he delivered a comprehensive lecture on understanding chronic pain in the human brain. During the lecture, Professor Apkarian highlighted the significant differences in the perception of pain and elucidated the contrasting functions of the centers responsible for acute and chronic pain.

Drawing from scientific data, the professor explained that certain acute pains may develop into chronic pain over time, while others may not. The lecture also delved into the current tactics employed for the treatment of chronic pain, which have been found to be less effective. In this regard, Professor Apkarian proposed the dopaminergic system as a target for the treatment of chronic pain.

Additionally, the lecture emphasized the need for different approaches to prevent the development of chronic pain, depending on gender.
